Visit

Rain comes down hard

on the edge of the table

where it extends

past the awning,

bouncing onto the checks,

making them too damp to sign.

The ink grows pale, peters out,

leaving my name

an empty impression.

The daughter who fails

to join me for coffee

oversleeps yet again,

I am told, leaving the rain

to fall in her place.
